The device has housing (2.1), a transparent element (2.4) near an opening in a first region (2.2) of the housing and a first sealing device (2.5) for sealing a sealing gap between the transparent element and the housing to seal the interior of the housing relative to its surroundings up to a first pressure level. A protective device (2.7) arranged outside the housing is movable from a first functional position in which the first region is covered so as to be sealed with respect to the surroundings to a second functional position in which the transparent element is exposed. An independent claim is also included for a viewing tube or optronic mast for an underwater vehicle with an inventive device.
