Disclosed is a method for beating paper or cellulose fibers, which is characterized in that unlike in a bladed refiner, for example, no or only a small relative speed is provided between the cooperating beating members in the direction of travel of the beating members. One or several beating rolls (2) in a beating drum (1) is/are made to rotate about the axis of rotation thereof while being guided along a circular path (8) whose center coincides with the center of the beating drum (1). The movement along the circular path (8) causes the beating rolls (2) to be pressed against the beating drum (1) from inside as a result of centrifugal forces (7). The kinematics of the beating device used are controlled with the aid of the drives of the beating drum (1) and the beating rolls (2). The beating rolls (2) are guided so as to obtain a certain movability in a radial direction in order to be able to let the centrifugal forces act as beating forces.
