The invention relates to a drive unit called a contra-angle , for rotating tools used in surgery, particularly in dental surgery, comprising a head (1) in which the tool is fixed and an elbow (2), each of the components of said contra-angle housing therein one or more elements of the kinematic transmission of the rotational movement of a motor to the tool driven thus, said elements of the kinematic drivetrain being input (3) or output (4) shafts, geared together by pinions (5, 6) and mounted to slide within the respective bodies thereof which form a sleeve and held against stops provided in the respective sleeve. The above is characterised in that the head (1) and the elbow (2) as well as the kinematic drivetrain (3, 4) are assembled together by means of a piece (7), called a coupler , arranged in the body of the elbow (2) through which a piece of the kinematic drivetrain passes. Said coupler comprises fixation means (24) for the body of the head (1) at one end thereof and fixation means (33) with a sleeve (8), at the other end thereof, arranged concentrically around the body of the elbow (2) and provided with a location stop (9) for cooperation with the kinematic drivetrain in the assembled position, such that said cooperation occurs following the direction of axial displacement of the sleeve (8) with relation to the coupler (7), either for the complete fixing of the kinematic drivetrain and the locking of the elbow (2) on the head (1) or the release of the kinematic chain and the unlocking of the elbow (2) from the head (1).
