The invention provides a method for testing a random number generator comprising a digitized noise source (DN), a post-processing unit (P) with memory elements (ME) and a control unit (C), comprising the steps of providing a stream of random bits (RB), setting the post-processing unit (P) to an initial state by means of the control unit (C), enabling the post-processing unit (P) by means of the control unit (C), post-processing a predetermined number M of random bits (RB) of the stream of random bits (RB) to obtain a random word (RW) having N bits, outputting the random word (RW) for testing purposes, repeating the above steps of providing a stream of random bits (RB), setting the post-processing unit (P) to an initial state, enabling the post-processing unit (P), post-processing a predetermined number M of random bits (RB), outputting a random word (RW) until all random words (RW) required by the test have been produced.
