The passively Q-switched solid-state laser comprises an ytterbium-doped solid-state host (4), preferably a fibre, as lasing medium and a samarium-doped solid-state host (3), preferably a fibre, that is placed inside the laser resonant cavity and that acts as passive Q-switch saturable absorber. In operation of the laser, stable amplitude and repetition rate passive Q-switch pulses of duration less than 1µs can be advantageously generated.
