Method for the metal-protective gas joining of steel with changing polarity and consumable electrode comprises using a protective gas containing no helium but argon and oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen or nitrogen oxides in an amount of 0.001-0.1 %. An independent claim is also included for a method for the metal-protective gas joining of aluminum, aluminum alloys, titanium, titanium alloys, magnesium alloys or nickel-based alloys with changing polarity and consumable electrode comprising using a protective gas containing no helium but argon and oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen or nitrogen oxides in an amount of 0.001-0.1 %.
