PURPOSE: A method for isolating and purifying an extract of Xanthium strumarium L., and use thereof are provided, which method stably and effectively isolating the extract of Xanthium strumarium L. having antimicrobial and antitumor activity without loss of its stability and activity. CONSTITUTION: The method for isolating and purifying an extract of Xanthium strumarium L. comprises the steps of: repeatitively extracting the hot water extract of Xanthium strumarium L. using ether under neutral condition; treating the ether neutral extract with anhydrous Na2SO4, and drying and concentrating extract; dissolving the concentrate in methanol, and subjecting the solution to TLC using CH2Cl2 and ethylacetate and silica gel column chromatography, HPLC using methanol and water, and GC/MS, sequentially.
