The method for the wrapping of a long or round object such as a steel component has the latter wrapped by stretch film (17). Over the stretch film is wound a covering tape material (20) which is more resistance-capable in comparison to the stretch film and which has an adhesive layer (21) on the side of the stretch film. The stretch film and tape material are wound in the same working cycle. The stretch film is wound to overlap in the individual winding actions. An independent claim is included for a long or round component, such as a steel component especially in the form of a steel band coil (11), a steel wire roll, or a rolling bearing, which is wrapped by stretch film and tape material by the aforesaid method.
