A system search method using a diversity receiver during handoff of a multi-mode terminal and a multi-mode terminal employing the method are provided to reduce the probability that a call is cut off during handoff by allocating two reception paths to each different system. The first and second RF receiving units(140a,140b) communicate with a base station. The first and second system modem units(120a,120b) modulate and demodulate the first and second system signals, respectively. The first and second switch units(130a,130b) selectively connect signals to/from the first and second RF receiving units(140a,140b) to the first or second system modem unit(120a,120b). A controller(110) controls the first and second switch units(130a,130b) to connect signals of the first and second RF receiving units(140a,140b) to the first system modem(120a), and controls the second switch unit(130b) to connect a signal of the second RF receiving unit(140b) to the second system modem unit(120b) when there is a need to search the second system.
