PURPOSE: A shape information encoding method for providing a real time object-based service is provided to reduce the complexity of the shape information encoding, thereby capable of encoding the shape information with real time. CONSTITUTION: When a video sequence to be transmitted or stored is inputted, a real time VOP(Video Object Plane) forming member(310) divides the video sequence by an object video unit, thereby forming different VOPs. The real time VOP forming member extracts only the minimum TRB(Tightest Rectangular Boundary) in a real time transmission. Each VOP is inputted to VOP encoding members(320-1,320-2,...), encoded by VOP encoding members, multiplexed by a multiplexer(330) and then transmitted as a bit stream. The encoded signals of VOPs are divided by a demuliplexer(360). The divided VOPs are decoded by a decoding member(370) including plural decoding members(370-1,370-2,370-3,...). The decoded signals are combined by a combining member(23) and outputted as an original image.
