A composite target in the shape of a bar is formed from ceramic powders and is destined to be evaporated under a beam of electrons. It contains zirconia and a stabilising agent. The stabilising agent has a molecular content of between 2 and 30% and the zirconia is formed with more than 90% of a monoclinic phase. Independent claims are also included for: (A) the fabrication of this target; (B) a thermal barrier with low thermal conductivity and high thermo-mechanical strength formed by evaporation of the target; (C) a ceramic coating incorporating a zirconia based ceramic layer; (D) a superalloy mechanical component with the zirconia based ceramic coating.
