FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy, namely process for producing magnesium by electrolysis of melt salts, namely processes for preparing cathode to electrolytic production of magnesium.;SUBSTANCE: process comprises steps of preliminarily etching surface of cathode by means of inorganic acids; decarburing annealing of cathode material in controlled gaseous atmosphere at 700 -1100°C for 20 - 48 h. As controlled gaseous atmosphere may be used hydrogen, nitrogen-hydrogen medium or vacuum. Etching by acid is realized at acid concentration 10 -18% at temperature 40 -80 °C for 30 -50 min. Nitrogen-hydrogen medium represents mixture of nitrogen, 96% and hydrogen, 4%.;EFFECT: increased useful life period of cathode, lowered cost, enhanced operational efficiency of electrolyzer.;6 cl, 1 tbl, 1 ex
