Process for surface treating a workpiece comprises: introducing a powdered auxiliary material (4) into a laser interaction region using a feed gas stream (7); heating using the laser beam (3); and guiding over the heated workpiece surface. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process. Preferred Features: The auxiliary material is focussed onto a processing region (18) on the workpiece surface which corresponds to the collision surface of the laser beam on the workpiece surface. The workpiece surface is melted using the laser beam.
