A knitting needle (2) has a shaft (5) with a wide section (12) and ends in a narrow hook (9). It operates in contact with a facing transfer needle (3), which ends in a hook (26) that is wider than the knitting needle hook (9) and also wider than the shaft (5) and the transfer needle body (23). The wide section (12) of the knitting needle houses a recess (16) that accommodates the shaped end (31) of the transfer hook (26). - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for a knitting machine with cams to provide the relative longitudinal motion (4) of the knitting and transfer needles and containing a spring arrangement to press the needles against each other. Also claimed is an alternative design that has the additional feature of providing a relative transverse movement between transfer needle and knitting needle as they move longitudinally against to each other by means of suitable cam surfaces on the needles.
