Spreaders(1) mounted on the roll surface have elastic ribs which, when a film passes over and applies pressure onto a contact rail forming an outer part of a spreader, deflect and produce an outward spreading movement of the film. Spreaders(1) are molded as a single plastic component and mounted in the roll so that spreading is induced from the roll center towards the ends. Contact rail length is shorter than the attached guide rail by an amount equal to the maximum transverse spreading produced by a single spreader. Spreaders are mounted on the roll either in extruded guide strips or in profiles machined directly into supporting material(4) forming the roll core. Spreaders are located around the roll circumference and gaps to allow for transverse movement of the contact rails are offset from each other. Complete spreaders may be produced by extrusion and the flexible ribs created by punching out of the flange surface between contact and guide rails.
