The piston ring for a separating piston (3) guided in a cylinder (1) is for the sealing of two cylinder chambers with a radially inwards pointing rib (4) supported in a slot (7) formed in the piston. The piston ring is constructed in one piece and closed. A recess (5) is formed on the radially outwards orientated side (24) of the piston ring lying opposite the rib. Chamfers (8) are formed on the axial ends (21,22) of the piston ring and in the fitted state form a free space between the piston and piston ring. An independent claim is included for a method for the fitting of a one-piece, closed piston ring in which the piston has an axial and/or radial oversize and is pressed onto the separating piston.
