Production of a porous micro-structured aluminum oxide ceramic comprises forming a porous micro-structured carbon-containing molded body, reacting the molded body via a reaction with aluminum into an A4C3 molded body and oxidizing the Al4C3 molded body into an aluminum oxide ceramic.
