The device has an actuating unit (1) acting on a piston (4) that is displaceable in a cylinder. Another actuating unit (6) is subjected with pressure from the piston and acts indirectly on a gas exchange valve. The cylinder is embedded in a hydraulic medium loop, which includes a supply line, discharge line and pump for actuation of the actuating unit (6). A control unit controls hydraulic medium flow rate in the discharge line. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine with a gas exchange valve and a device for actuating a gas exchange valve.
