Lambda probe electrode characteristics determining method involves measuring a lambda probe (LS) voltage during unloaded and loaded condition by using a load resistance. A reference air volume is loaded with additional oxygen, over the measurement period of the oxygen partial pressure, for measuring an internal resistance of the probe in the loaded condition. Electrode characteristics of the probe are determined based on the measured internal resistance.
