A method for the production of coated substrates with a 3-dimensional structured surface by impregnating paper with a crosslinkable aminoplastic resin (I), applying the impregnated paper to the substrate and forming it 3-dimensionally, in which the base paper used contains 5-90 wt% synthetic polymer fibres based on total fibre content. An independent claim is also included for aminoplastic resin sheet or film containing the above paper impregnated with (I).
