The system has a base unit with racks for accommodating commodities e.g. files and documents. The files are arranged parallel to a wall when the racks (32) are in an idle state, to provide a rack depth of 10 or 20 centimeter. The direction of loading the racks is laterally parallel to the wall. Two vertical pipes (31) are connected with each other by flat sections. The pipes are designed as a stable form for accommodating the racks.
