A background for an aquarium or terrarium has a shaped panels (2) positioned behind the rear long side and/or the narrow end sides and illuminated by a dedicated light (1) to simulate a greater depth of view. The panel can be contoured convex or concave, depending on the required effect. The light can be a separate fitting or integrated into the main lighting. Using interchangeable background panels different effects can be created.
