Biofilm inhibiting protective layer (A) (based on functional silica nano-particles), for heat exchangers, comprises a functional nano-particle of: 1-10 mol.% of covalently bonded quaternary nitrogen compound (a), silicon dioxide (b) (60- 95 mol.%), 0-20 mol.% of 1-6C alkyl (c) and 0-5 mol.% of hydrophilic groups (d).
