A lower tool or tool holder for a carrier part to be coated with the film or sheet(14) has a vacuum connection to draw a pre-heated film, held in a clamping frame(15a,15b), onto the tool or carrier part surface. A film in the clamping frame is initially stretched by a pre-stretching frame(16) which is moved vertically into a position where it surrounds at least part of the tool or tool holder and projects above the latter. For a tool with pronounced raised areas and depressions over the whole surface the pre-stretching frame should be closed around the outside and completely surround the tool or tool holder.
