The method involves sub dividing a total quantity of distributable reference image blocks in to two subsets of respective reference image blocks by a statistic selection criterion. The reference image blocks of one of the subset are discarded. One of the reference image blocks of another subset is used for encoding a current image (OB) according to a coding method. The total quantity is regenerated for a next image to be encoded.
