The system has an ambient line (14) leading from an inlet (19) to atmospheric surroundings and containing a shut-off valve (17) and a fuel vapor filter (16), an engine line (15) leading from the vapor filter to the engine's induction tract (2) and containing a tank venting valve (18) and a controller (6) for conducting a leak test by closing the engine line and the ambient line and driving a pump (8) to supply fuel from an auxiliary tank (21) into the fuel tank. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating an inventive system.
