A compound comprising lignin or lignin derivatives, natural resin and a non-hazardous blowing agent is prepared. The compound is then molded in a heated tool where it foams (2,3) and is then solidified to form a porous product. A compound comprising lignin or lignin derivatives, natural resin and a non-hazardous blowing agent is prepared. The compound is then molded in a heated tool where it foams (2,3) and is then solidified to form a porous product. Additional materials may be added to the compound including cellulose and/or starch containing materials. The compound may be compacted prior to foaming. Final product density or porosity depend on the amount of blowing agent and/or ratio of the compound volume to the tool volume. A density gradient(2,3) through the product can be controlled using a combination of different blowing agents. Several compounds, each with different material quantities and different levels of blowing agents can be arranged one above the other to create a sandwich preform which is then heated so that all compounds foam simultaneously. An independent claim is included for a molded product based on the described materials and at least partly foamed.
