In a method for preparing for removal of a yarn ball, having a yarn layer deposited during spinning under spinning tension on the internal wall of a rotating spinning top, where a doffing spindle is inserted into the top and yarn ball, the spindle and top are brought to a synchronous rotating speed, the rotating speed is reduced and the ball is transferred onto the spindle under lessening centrifugal force, the spinning tension during spinning is modified so that on subsequent removal of the ball no yarn layers with strongly deviating spinning tensions are transferred to the spindle. An independent claim is included for apparatus for carrying out the process, comprising a spinning top (1) mounted on a controllable rotational drive (3); a filament guide tube (4) for supplying twistable filament (5) to the internal wall (7) of the top to form yarn layers (9) of a yarn ball (8); a doffing spindle mounted on a controllable rotational drive, for insertion into the top to remove the yarn ball; and a synchronizer for the drives of the top and doffing spindle. The novel feature is that the drive for the top is provided with a rotational speed regulator for increasing the rotational speed of the top with increasing distance of the yarn layer from the internal wall of the top.
