Removing nitrogen oxides (NOx) from lean exhaust gases from a combustion process using a porous NOx storage structure comprises continuously loading the structure with NOx from the exhaust gas inlet side (S1) and periodically regenerating the structure from the other side (S2), which is not in direct contact with the exhaust gas from which NOx are to be removed.
