The device has a differential pressure measuring unit (12) that is provided, with which a pressure difference between a pressure which prevails in a combustion chamber (11) and a pressure of a supplied oxidant before entry into the combustion chamber is detected. The pressure difference is adjustable and controllable. Ignition of a burner is detected and monitored with the differential pressure measuring unit. An independent claim is also included for a process for operating a burner in a petrol engine.
