The method involves inserting tool units into individual tool retainers of multiple tool carriers and moving identification units of the tool units by tool positioning movements at a read head. The identification units are selected by the head. The allocation of the tool units to the retainers is determined by a machine controller (70) as actual tool allocation and the actual allocation is compared with the allocation to the retainers. An independent claim is also included for a machine tool.
