The operating device for the selecting and shifting of gear speeds of an automated multi-step transmission of a motor vehicle has a motor-powered spindle shaft (1) which has a radially encompassing groove (4), a spindle nut (6) with an axially movable pin (7), and an activatable and deactivable actuator (10) constructed in such a way that by this the pin enters the radially encompassing groove to carry out a shift gate selection and is movable outside of the groove to carry out a gear shift action.
