Harmful particulate pollutants are removed by feeding effluent gases through a reducing taper, spiral duct, of circular or oval section, to the tangential inlet of a cyclone separator. A fan (6) abstracts fine particles via vortex chambers (4, 5) formed in the upper wall surface of the duct, for separation by a filter (7). An independent claim is included for an arrangement for separating particulates from air or gas streams.
