The ceramic or steel kitchen knife sharpener (10) consists of a grinding body of modified inverted Y-shaped or Omega-shaped cross-section. The hollow stem of the Y-section (12) forms a rounded sharpening surface (13) over which a knife blade may be drawn. The stem of the Y-section has straight sides (16) which slope outward slightly toward the top sharpening surface and the sides (14) of the support portion (11) slope inward at 45 degrees. The bottom edges (15) have cutouts near the ends, accommodating rubber pads which rest on the kitchen table.
