The control gear is for two parallel overhead camshafts of a reciprocating piston engine, whereby a crankshaft chain wheel (12) drives a control chain wheel (14) via a control chain. The camshaft chain wheels (16,17) each consist of a driving gearwheel (22) and a tensioning gearwheel (23) which are elastically tensioned in relation to one another in opposite rotational directions. The tooth flanks of the driving gearwheel roll on an intermediate gearwheel's (15) tooth flanks pointing in the drive direction.
