Device for detecting objects in the surroundings of a motor vehicle has at least a thermopile as a sensor. At least one thermopile is mounted on the vehicle at a height above approximately 80 cm. At least one thermopile is mounted in the area of the A-, B- or C-pillars, front or rear screen top edges, vehicle superstructure, lighting unit, radiator grill, windscreen wiper system and headlamp wiper system.
