The compound material window (10), especially as the leading panel in the window of a detector of a target-seeking missile, is composed of a window (12) and a mounting (14). The window is transparent in the infra red spectrum. The mounting has a stretch limit of =250 MPa and especially =200 MPa and a stretch to fracture of =10%. The window and mounting materials have a thermal coefficient of expansion difference between them of =100% and especially =60%. The window is bonded to the mounting by an inorganic adhesive around the outer contour (20) of the window. A nonwoven (16) of ceramic fibers is between the window and the mounting base (18). The window is of a ceramic material and especially sapphire.
