The device has an up voltage converter (15,27,19,20) and polarity inversion protection (13,16,18) with a switching relay (13) that isolates a protected circuit (21-24,26) from an input voltage if inversion occurs. The relay coil (15) also acts as the choke coil of the converter and a coil current can be clocked by a controllable clock switching arrangement (17). The winding of the relay coil has a large cross-section for generating a low internal impedance allowing a high converter load current and a low winding number for producing a defined magnetic flux linkage. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a method of manufacturing a relay/choke coil (B) and a coil carrier.
