A calender (5, 6) for flattening paper, cardboard, tissue etc., with a fibrous sheet (1) on a feeder (3), in which the end of a sheet from one roll is connected to the front of a new roll replacing the first using a joint which is thicker than the sheet (1), has elongated calender press gaps and a pressure not exceeding 20 MPa in the gap under normal operating conditions. An independent claim is also included for a method for flattening paper, cardboard, tissue or other fibrous sheet materials, using a calender system as described above in which the fibrous sheet passes through elongated press gaps and is subjected to a pressure of not more than 20 MPa.
