The method involves evaluating sensor signals of an optical sensor (2), and consulting sensor signals of an additional capacitive sensor (3) to verify the detection of the optical sensor. A comparison of the sensor signals of both sensors is made at an evaluation unit for deciding whether salt or dirt are found on a windscreen. The principles of operations of the sensors are different. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a device for detecting water on a vehicle pane comprises a sensor (B) an application of a device for detecting water to control a windscreen wiper of a vehicle (C) a vehicle with a device for detecting water on a vehicle pane.
