The method involves determining difference of image and reference image data and compressing the image and the difference data. The compressed difference data is stored in a main memory, if data rate of the compressed difference data is smaller than the data rate of an actual compressed image data. The compressed data is stored in the memory if the data rate is larger. The existing reference data is replaced by new reference data. An independent claim is also included for a device for recording an analog video signal.
