The motor vehicle seat (1) has a seat section (2) and a variably inclinable seat back (3) interconnected by a locking mechanism (5) which is operated by a pull cable (7). The pivot axis (4) of the seat back is of such height that the rear side of the seat back can be located horizontally in the cargo position. The pull cable is operated by a lever (11) installed below the locking mechanism, and in each raked position of the seat back between the in-use position and cargo position the cable has a section extending through the pivot axis or in its direct vicinity.
