The device has a cross beam (13) extending from a side of a drive shaft (14) to another side of the shaft. The beam has a recess that is closed by a closing unit (26), which supports a drive shaft bearing and connected with the beam. The unit with the beam forms a profile with an interior through hole (40) in the area of the recess, where the hole extends in the vehicle longitudinal direction and the shaft extends within the hole. An independent claim is also included for a method for mounting a support device for a commercial vehicle.
