The method involves determination of oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of oxidation catalyst with gradient (delta S/delta t) of signal values (S) of oxygen loading sensor. Maximum oxygen loading (OSmax) of oxidation catalytic converter is reached after driving the internal combustion engine over certain length of time and corresponding upper limit value (SG) of signal values of oxygen loading sensor is obtained.
