The method involves enabling performance increase of a water heater by rated load-carrying capacity of a supply line (8) and determining a permissible excess of the rated load-carrying capacity of the line. The permissible excess is adjusted by a controlling and regulating unit by performance adjustment at a heating unit and the permissible excess of the capacity is compared with an actual line load. An independent claim is also included for a water heater.
