Preparation of a polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether (I) comprises feeding methylal and trioxane to a reactor and reacting in the presence of an acidic catalyst, where the quantity of water introduced into the reaction mixture by means of the methylal, trioxane and/or the catalyst is less than 1 wt.%, related to the reaction mixture. Preparation of a polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether (I) of formula (H 3CO(CH 2O) nCH 3) (where n is 2-10) comprises feeding methylal and trioxane to a reactor and reacting in the presence of an acidic catalyst, where the quantity of water introduced into the reaction mixture by means of the methylal, trioxane and/or the catalyst are less than 1 wt.%, related to the reaction mixture.
