Camera-based object examination method involves illuminating a part of an object using light sources (12, 13) with known illumination vectors. Image data is recorded from the illuminated part using a camera and image processing is performed. The object and the light sources are arranged such that the distribution of the projection of the illumination vector on the object surface and the circumference of a defect on the object forms a right angle. An independent claim is also included for a device for camera-based examination of an object.
