The device has an electric motor (4) with a cam shaft (6) and cams to operate a gas exchange valve (2). A control unit (20) temporarily shutdown the valve and controls the motor according to a preset shutdown reference path, during a partial lifting operation of the valve. The valve is shutdown and the motor is controlled in such a way that the shaft and cams are transferred into moment neutral and/or force neutral position. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a lifting process of a gas exchange valve of an internal combustion engine.
