The thread guide is a heating rail (10) with a long, grooved path (11) carrying the thread (6). So that the thread shall make contact with it, the groove is curved. Heating of the thread is by contact with the heating rail. The heating rail makes close, thermally-conducting contact with the heater (2). The heating unit (1') has a temperature regulator, reducing temperature when the heating rail (10) is used for contact heating, rather than for convective heating. There is provision to replace the heating rail. A thermally-conductive paste, high temperature grease or highly-conductive resilient material, intervenes between rail and heater. The heating unit is associated with a swirling device agitating the thread, causing it to vibrate in the groove, hence cleaning it. Modifications suitable for convective- and contact heating are described. A clip-in device (12) is used for rail attachment. The groove shape in the rail accords with that of the thread being processed, in terms of its radius or width. It causes the thread to rotate in the groove, hence cleaning it.
