The vehicle safety system has a sensor to scan the ambient environment for any detected obstacles to be evaluated (1) for a collision risk. If there is a potential risk, the vehicle brake system (2) is prepared for emergency braking by eliminating free movement in the pedal control. If there is no collision or emergency braking, the brake action is interrupted (5) and if a collision is inevitable then emergency braking is activated (6). If a collision does not occur within a given time window, especially of about 50 ms after a computed collision time point, then the brake action is terminated (8). A reversible safety belt tensioner is activated together with the emergency brake action.
